How WebDetect works in five easy steps:

  1. Register...
    Once the WebDetect software is installed on your PC/Laptop, it 'interrogates' the system to record all available component serial numbers and sends them over the net to register with the WebDetect servers (this can also be done by post).
  2. Handshake...
    Each time the computer goes on-line, the software "hand-shakes" the server to confirm that it has not been reported stolen. In the event of a computer being stolen, the user reports it to the police and to WebDetect. The theft is "flagged" on the WebDetect server.
  3. Verify...
    When the stolen computer is reconnected to any external e-mail, internet or fax line the software connects to WebDetects servers without alerting the thief.
  4. Call...
    It registers as a stolen machine and the trace process begins by recording the ISP and IP address of the computer along with the exact time of connection. As soon as the illegal user drops the internet connection, the software covertly dials WebDetects CLI server via an 0800 number.
  5. Trace...
    Using BT Data, the exact point of dialling is traced and national dial code, local exchange and unique line numbers are recorded. This information together with the legal user details is sent to the local police, who can then instigate proceedings to recover the stolen goods. Not only does WebDetect assist with the recovery it also gives the Police a greater chance to apprehend and bring charges against the thief.
