Security basics for broadband users:
- Back up your critical files on a regular basis. If a virus, worm or trojan horse ever damages your files, you will be able to restore them.
- Use anti-virus software and update regularly; see our anti-virus page.
- Use anti-trojan software and update regularly; see our anti-trojan
page. Use anti-trojan software in addition to, not instead of, anti-virus software.
- Use privacy software; see our privacy page.
- When you are not using your computer, turn it off so that a hacker can't get in (overnight, etc).If your cable/dsl modem has an on/off switch for the connection to your computer, turn it off when you are not surfing the Internet. If it does not have a
switch, check with your ISP to see if an upgrade is available. Note: Do NOT turn off the modem if it is an "always-on"
connection.
- If you use Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express, consider replacing them with another well regarded email program
like Eudora. Propagation of most malicious code (virus, Trojan & worm) is done by email and is designed to take advantage of weaknesses in Microsoft products. Eudora is supported by the email scanners of Norton, Panda, McAfee and Trend Micro anti-virus products.
